Mellow Yellow Head Turning Machine (lambretta GP rebuild)

Indian Lambretta GP Full Restoration – From Wreck to Revival

Every so often, a scooter arrives in the workshop that looks like it’s on its last legs — but with enough time, skill, and patience, you can bring it back to life. This Indian Lambretta GP came to us for what was supposed to be a quick check-over, but as soon as we started inspecting it, we realised it needed a complete overhaul.

The engine was running dry, with no oil and a cracked engine case, and the frame itself was damaged, including a bent rear frame loop and broken stand struts. At that point, we knew a full strip-down and rebuild was the only way to do it right.

We began by repairing the engine case, followed by a vapour blast to get it looking and performing like new. Once cleaned up, we built it back with a BGM RT195 cylinder kit and a GT 60mm crankshaft, combining reliability with a nice boost in performance. We matched that with an LI150 gearbox, MB Scooters 5-plate clutch kit, and a UNI Easy Clutch setup for smooth operation.

To modernise the electrics, we installed a Vape 12v electronic ignition kit along with an MB Scooters Simple 12v wiring loom, which includes a front brake light switch for added safety. Power delivery and reliability were further enhanced with SIP tubeless wheel rims, while the suspension was upgraded using BGM F16 front dampers and a Pro-Tec rear shock for a smoother, more controlled ride.

We also fitted a SIP digital speedometer and a disc brake setup courtesy of Andy Francis Scooters, giving the GP a perfect blend of vintage style and modern usability. Breathing and exhaust were handled by a 28mm Dell’Orto carburettor feeding into a Franspeed Sports Tourer exhaust, providing crisp throttle response and a refined, road-friendly tone.

As with many imported scooters, this GP had been poorly assembled by a previous owner, and as a result, we ended up replacing an endless list of parts to put things right. Sadly, this is becoming a common story for customers who buy Lambrettas that have been hastily put together — but with the right attention to detail, they can be transformed into the reliable machines they were always meant to be.

Once the mechanical side was sorted, the frame was sent to Swiss Tony Scooters for alignment, ensuring everything was straight before reassembly. The paintwork was handled locally in Penarth, and as you can see from the images, the head-turning yellow finish features a subtle metallic flake that really brings the scooter to life under the light.

After countless hours of careful work, the result speaks for itself: a beautifully restored Indian Lambretta GP that blends period character with modern performance — built properly, from the ground up, and ready to be enjoyed for years to come.
