NEW - BGM PRO SPORT gearshift cross with three-zone hardening

The BGM PRO SPORT shift cross has now a three-zone hardening.
Elastic inside - maximum resistance outside

  • Inside up to 45HRC

  • Middle 50-55HRC

  • Outside 58-60HRC

QUALITY
BGM PRO uses a very good basic material - a 15CrMo5 (SCM415) chrome molybdenum steel. This case hardening steel is already tough by itself, but due to its alloying elements (chromium, manganese, nickel, molybdenum) it is also very wear resistant.

HARDENING
The additional, complex three-zone hardening provides increased wear resistance on the one hand, while maximizing protection and durability of the gear components on the other. It is therefore ideally suited to the high demands of today's high-performance and high-torque engines. The technical principle behind it goes from an elastic inner core to a firmer middle section to the stable and resistant outer flanks that engage with the gear wheel.

ADVANTAGE
Compared to a simple hardening (same hardness over the entire component) of a conventional gearshift cross, the BGM PRO SPORT offers significant advantages.
It resists coarser shifters due to the elastic core, and at the same time the flanks are very resistant to wear.

DURABILITY
With HRC 58-60, the BGM PRO SPORT is at the hardness level of gear sprockets. This is the upper limit we recommend for a gear cross. Our analyses showed that the available shift crosses of other suppliers have partly clearly higher degrees of hardness (over HRC70!). In a conventional and old-fashioned design such as the wedge gearbox in the Vespa engines, this leads to the fact that the shifting cross is still in good shape after decades, but the gearwheels wear out excessively quickly. BGM PRO therefore follows the original design idea of Piaggio and lets the shifting cross instead of the gearwheels be the component that absorbs the forced wear of such a gearbox design.

ASSEMBLY TIPS
For optimized durability of all transmission components, the following things should be paid attention to on the large frame engines:

  • Shift detent without noticeable wear (roller bracket of the detent must have no play in the bearing).

  • Correctly distance the gearbox during the engine overhaul (maximum play should not exceed 0.4mm, we recommend staying well below this (ideal: 0.1mm))

  • meshing surfaces of the gearshift cross in the gearwheels should be flat

  • Combination type gearwheels / shifting cross / shifting key must fit to each other (do not mix PX old (cranked shifting cross) and PX Lusso (flat shifting cross))

  • The thread in the gearshift cross is a left-hand thread. To loosen the bolt, therefore, unscrew it clockwise.
